Two young artists from Sadeeqa’s Learning System (SLS) Montessori & High School won the Nukta Art workshop in Art Beat, The Little Art’s National Child Art Competition, says a press release.

Sarah Khan of grade 6, SLS New Lalazar campus and Fizza Haider of grade 4, SLS, Peshawar Road Junior branch won this workshop out of hundreds of student artist entries in this year’s competition. The eight day art workshop was held at the Nukta Studios under the guidance of Sajjad Akram, Artist and Assistant Professor at the National College of Arts, Rawalpindi.

Following the theme of this year’s Little Art Competition ‘My Teacher – My Hero’, the workshop kicked off with the introduction of the famous ‘Art Heroes’ of Pakistan. Students then got to choose their favourite artist and were introduced to the basics of portrait making and making impression moulds from clay.

The students started learning from tracing portraits and then learnt to sketch them without the tracing paper. Three portraits were made by each student following three different methods, through shading, using colours in an abstract way and by making a collage of the portrait. The collage making activity was a favourite for the students. Recycled old magazines were used to define the light and dark areas of the portrait.

In the second half of the workshop the students learnt to mount their paintings in various ways. Some mounted them in a simple format, others made patterns on the box board sheet. The last three days of the workshop were the most enjoyable as the young artists got to work in a professional art lab. Students made slabs out of clay, carefully measuring the length, width and the thickness of the clay slab. In the second step the students were told to think of a story and develop it on the clay slab by carving impressions on it. This involved lots of dirt filled hands, fun and big smiling faces all around.

SLS Schools Managing Director Asiya Talha congratulated the students on their selection to be a part of such a wonderful learning experience. The students’ projects will be displayed for public viewing after the holidays.
